Turkey: how much did women’s participation in the labor force increase?

Efkan Ala: “The rate of women’s participation in labor force have increased to 45% whereas it was below 10 % ten years ago.”

Fact-check by Dogruluk Payi (Turkey)

Minister of Interior Efkan Ala claimed that the rate of women’s participation in labor force have increased to 45% whereas it was below 10% 10 years ago. In order to fact-check this statement we refer to the data provided by Turkish Statistical Institute. According to the most recent data provided by the Institute in September 2014, the rate of female participation in labor force is around 31.1%. In 2004 this rate was 23.3%. In other words, the actual increase in female participation in labor force in the last 10 years is 7.8%. Hence we conclude that Minister Ala’s claim is false.
